Gershon Ben Keren

Self Defense Instructor Profile (Massachusetts)

I have been involved in martial arts for over 25 years, as both a ‘traditional’ martial artist (regional and national Judo champion as an adult and child; Black Belt traditional Jiu-Jitsu etc) and a reality based self-defence instructor.

I have also researched and lectured on the subject of aggression and violence from both academic (I have a BA Hons in Social Sciences) and practical perspectives.

I have taught and trained law enforcement, military and special forces members as well as members of the general public.

I was originally involved in several military based systems and have been a Krav Maga (Israeli Defense Forces system of unarmed/close combat) instructor with two associations, spending time in Israel training. I became involved in SEPS when I began to realise that my Krav Maga training was not directly addressing my civilian students issues: that they were coming at self-protection from a different angle with a different mindset and different concerns. Trying to get civilians to adopt the necessary mindset to make these systems work was on the whole an uphill struggle.

I now solely teach SEPS as a self-defense system (I still practice Jiu-Jutsu and grappling along with MMA – Mixed Martial Arts) and enjoy the similarities that it has with the Krav Maga systems I learnt e.g. the directness and effectiveness – present a problem, find a solution, but I find SEPS has a far broader and more comprehensive approach to dealing with the problem of aggressive and violent situations and can offer an individual far more solutions to the problem.
