There was a day when a uniform and the officer wearing it were respected. Police and security personnel today often find themselves having to deal with people who are all to aware of the legal constraints that such individuals have to work to and behave as if this allows them a greater freedom to behave in the way they want. I have seen situations where members of the public have felt empowered in their actions because they know what an officer is allowed and not allowed to do.

Unfortunately this attitude often means that they up the ante of the situation to the point where the officer has to act in a more extreme manner than the original situation ‘justified’. This is not the choice the officer would prefer to take but the individuals they are dealing with have left few other options available.

By understanding how situations develop from a non law-enforcement perspective and then introducing the factors that the uniform brings, it is possible for an officer to ‘alter’ the role that they play on a situation-by-situation basis, playing to the strengths of the uniform and off-setting its weaknesses.

Backing this approach up with effective physical techniques (training in gun retention, control and arrest etc) means SEPS can offer a comprehensive training package to law enforcement and security personnel.
